As of Mar 31, 2017, Sherwin-Williams operated 4,190 paint stores in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Maarten, Jamaica, Curacao and Aruba.

In fiscal 2016, the company opened 109 (86 US) new stores and closed 15 (9 US) stores. During the first quarter of fiscal 2017, the company opened 10 net new stores. Management's goal is to expand the store base an average of approximately 2.5% each year, primarily through organic growth.

As of year end, 207 paint stores were owned and 3,973 were leased. As per company-provided figures, paint stores average approximately 4,500 square feet, with about half devoted to the sales floor.
