As of Jun 30, 2018, there were 3,328 company-operated stores in all 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico and Canada, in addition to 1,072 domestic and 2,008 international franchised locations, and 2,361 GNC franchise store-within-a-store locations in Rite Aid.
In fiscal 2017, the company opened 59 new stores, refranchised 60 net stores, and closed 207 stores. During this period, domestic franchisees opened 29 stores while closing 50, international franchisees opened 243 stores while closing 201, and 60 net store-within-a-store locations were added. The company closed 95 net stores, while franchisees closed 34 net stores in the first half of fiscal 2018. For full-year fiscal 2018, the company intends to close approximately 200 stores, and to open a limited number of new stores.
At year-end, all but one company-owned store was located on leased premises. Leases generally provide for an initial term of between five and ten years, and may include renewal options for varying terms thereafter.
Stores typically range in size from 1,000 to 2,000 square feet and are located primarily in shopping malls and strip shopping centers, and domestic franchise locations are primarily in strip shopping centers (90%), as well as shopping malls.
