As of Sep 30, 2017, there were 3,468 company-operated stores in all 50 states, D.C. and Puerto Rico, Canada, Ireland and China, in addition to 1,126 domestic and 2,075 international franchised locations, and 2,414 GNC franchise store-within-a-store locations in Rite Aid.
In fiscal 2016, the company opened 69 new stores, refranchised 91 net stores, and closed 59 stores. During this period, domestic franchisees opened 33 stores while closing 20, international franchisees opened 108 stores while closing 230, and 31 net store-within-a-store locations were added. In the first nine quarters of fiscal 2017, store counts inclusive of shops within Rite Aid decreased by 64 stores, systemwide. In fiscal 2017, the company expects to decelerate new store openings.
At year-end, all but one company-owned store was located on leased premises. Leases generally provide for an initial term of between five and ten years, and may include renewal options for varying terms thereafter.
Stores typically range in size from 1,000 to 2,000 square feet and are located primarily in shopping malls and strip shopping centers, and domestic franchise locations are primarily in strip shopping centers (90%), as well as shopping malls.
