In fiscal 2016, the company closed 48 stores in North America, in addition to selling its stores in Europe. During the first quarter of fiscal 2017, the company closed 18 net stores in the US. The company expects to close 70 stores in fiscal 2017.
Most stores are leased, with renewal options at increased rents, and are operated in a variety of retail store formats tailored to the unique characteristics of each location. The 'Dover' superstore, which represents the majority of the U.S. store base, has been reduced over time from 24,000 square feet to a 12,000 square feet prototype. The company also operates smaller format stores designed for rural markets (14,600 square feet) and dense urban markets (10,000 square feet), as well as copy and print shops which range in size from 3,000 to 4,000 square feet.
