As of Nov 18, 2017, the company operated 5,480 AutoZone stores in 49 states, including Puerto Rico; 529 stores in Mexico; 14 stores in Brazil; and 26 Interamerican Motor Corporation (“IMC”) branches.

In fiscal 2017, the company opened 168 stores domestically, 41 stores in Mexico, and 6 stores in Brazil. During the first quarter of fiscal 2018, the company added 15 net stores domestically and 5 stores in Mexico. The company expects to open 150 stores in fiscal 2018.

Stores average approximately 6,600 square feet, with 85% to 90% of each store’s square footage devoted to selling space. Most stores are "destination stores," situated on major thoroughfares with easy access and good parking, generating their own traffic rather than relying on traffic created by adjacent stores. At year-end, the company owned approximately 48% of its stores. In recent years, the mix of store openings has moved away from build-to-suit leases to ground leases and land purchases.
