During the fiscal 2018, the company opened 258 net new stores, and expects to open 238 net new stores in fiscal 2019. The company opened 114 net new stores in the first half of fiscal 2019. Long term, the company believes there is the potential for 6,100 stores globally.
Virtually all store locations are leased and are generally located in community shopping centers. Leases are generally for 10-year terms with options to extend the lease term for one or more 5-year periods in the U.S. and Canada, 10 to 15-year terms in Europe, and 7 to 10-year periods in Australia. TJX has the right to terminate some of these leases before the expiration date under specified circumstances and some with specified payments.
