As of Oct 31, 2017, Walmart operated 11,703 stores worldwide, including in the US and Puerto Rico: 402 Walmart Discount Stores, 3,552 Walmart Supercenters, 718 Neighborhood Markets and 80 other Small Formats, and 660 Sam's Club stores; Internationally there were 6,291 stores.
In fiscal 2017, the company opened 111 Walmart stores in the US, including 73 small formats, and closed 13 stores; opened 9 and closed 4 Sam's Club stores; and opened 64 net new stores internationally. During the first nine months of fiscal 2017, the company opened 203 and closed 200 stores.
As of year-end, in the U.S. Walmart owned 4,023 of the buildings in which discount stores operated and 561 of the buildings in which Sam’s Clubs operated (land on which stores are located is either owned or leased by the company). The remaining 649 stores and 99 clubs were leased. Internationally, the company owned 2,134 stores, while the remaining 4,229operating units were leased.
Walmart Supercenters average approximately 178,000 square feet, Discount stores average approximately 104,000 square feet, Small Format stores average approximately 41,000 square feet and Sam's Clubs stores average approximately 134,000 square feet. International stores average approximately 59,000 square feet.
