As of Oct 31, 2018, Walmart operated 11,277 stores worldwide, including in the US and Puerto Rico: 388 Walmart Discount Stores, 3,568 Walmart Supercenters, 711 Neighborhood Markets and 88 other Small Formats, and 597 Sam's Club stores; Internationally there were 5,925 stores.

In fiscal 2018, the company opened 115 Walmart stores in the US, including 85 small formats, and closed 26 stores; opened 4 and closed 67 Sam's Club stores; and closed 3 net stores internationally. During the first nine months of fiscal 2019, the company opened 125 and closed/sold 509 stores.

As of year-end, in the U.S. Walmart owned 4,066 of the buildings in which discount stores operated and 512 of the buildings in which Sam’s Clubs operated (land on which stores are located is either owned or leased by the company). The remaining 695 stores and 85 clubs were leased. Internationally, the company owned 2,142 stores, while the remaining 4,218 operating units were leased.

Walmart Supercenters average approximately 178,000 square feet, Discount stores average approximately 105,000 square feet, Small Format stores average approximately 38,000 square feet and Sam's Clubs stores average approximately 134,000 square feet. International stores average approximately 59,000 square feet.
