In fiscal 2017, the company opened 22 new stores and closed 16 stores. The company opened 7 new stores and closed 2 stores in the first quarter of fiscal 2018. In fiscal 2018, the company expects to close approximately 40 stores, unless it is able to negotiate more favorable lease terms with its landlords, and open approximately 20 new stores, with the majority being Baby and Cost Plus World Market stores

The company leases primarily all of its existing stores, with original lease terms that generally range from 10 to 15 years, and most leases provide for renewal options, often at increased rents.

Stores are located in suburban areas of medium and large-sized cities, situated in strip and power strip shopping centers, as well as in major off-price and conventional malls, and in free standing buildings. Stores range in size from approximately 5,000 to 100,000 square feet, but are predominantly between 18,000 and 50,000 square feet. Approximately 85% to 90% of store space is used for selling areas and the balance for warehouse, receiving and office space.
