As of Sep 6, 2014 Safeway operated 1,331 stores in 18 states in the Western, Southwestern, Rocky Mountain, and Mid-Atlantic regions of the US under the Safeway, Vons, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb, and Carrs Quality Centers brands.
In fiscal 2013, the company opened 7 stores and closed 18 stores, sold its Canada operations to Sobeys Inc., and exited the Chicago market where it operated 72 Dominick's stores. In the first nine months of fiscal 2014, Safeway closed 4 stores. Rather than opening new stores, the company is focused on selling or closing underperforming stores, as well as completing "Lifestyle" remodels, which showcase an expanded perishables offering.
At year end, the company owned approximately 46% of its stores and leased 54% of its stores. Most leases have renewal options, typically with increased rental rates during the option period, and some contain options to purchase the property at amounts that approximate fair market value. The average store size was approximately 47,500 square feet, with 10.9% of stores less than 30,000 square feet, 40.5% between 30,000 and 50,000 square feet, and 48.6% more than 50,000 square feet.
