As of May 5, 2018, there were 3,171 company-operated stores worldwide including 2,637 stores in North America (806 Gap, 1,074 Old Navy, 572 Banana Republic, 147 Athleta, 38 Intermix), 155 Gap stores in Europe and 379 stores in Asia (320 Gap, 14 Old Navy, 45 Banana republic), as well as 446 franchised stores in 45 countries.

In fiscal 2017, the company opened 118 stores and closed 153 stores. During the first quarter of fiscal 2018, the company opened 26 stores and closed 20 stores. In fiscal 2018, the company expects to open 25 net new locations, with store openings to be focused on Athleta and Old Navy locations, with closures weighted toward Gap brand and Banana Republic.

Almost all stores are leased, typically with a five-year base period, with one or more renewal options after the initial term. Gap North America stores average approximately 10,400 square feet, Banana Republic North America stores average approximately 8,500 sq ft, Old Navy North America stores average approximately 16,600 sq ft, Athleta stores average approximately 4,100 sq ft, and Intermix stores average approximately 2,600 sq ft.
