As of Dec 27, 2015, the company operated 70 restaurants, and franchisees operated 1,900 domestic restaurants and 569 international restaurants in 48 states, the District of Columbia, and 27 foreign countries.
During fiscal 2015, the company opened 5 restaurants, and franchisees opened 214 and closed 53 restaurants. In fiscal 2016, the company expects to open 200 to 235 new locations, 85 to 100 of which will be opened internationally. Net restaurant openings are expected to be in the range of 140 to 185, for a net unit growth rate of approximately 6% to 7%.
At year-end, the company owned the land and building for 20 of its restaurants, and leased the land and/or the building at the remaining 50 locations. In addition, the company owns the land and the building at 24 restaurants and leases the land and/or the building for 44 locations which are leased or subleased to franchisees.
The current prototype is a free-standing building with a drive-thru of approximately 2,700 square feet and seating for 60 guests, at a dominant corner lot with a minimum lot size of 30,000 square feet, a minimum population of 45,000 within a 2 mile radius and an average daily traffic count of 20,000 on the primary artery, at a traffic light with convenient ingress & egress on the "going home" side of the street. The company will also consider in-line locations and non-traditional sites such as airports, malls and college campuses.
