In fiscal 2018, the company opened or acquired a net 2,076 company-operated stores, and licensees closed or sold a net 91 stores. In fiscal 2019, the company expects to open approximately 2,100 net new stores.

Nearly all company-operated stores are leased, typically for initial terms of 10 or 20 years.

Traditionally, Starbucks stores averaged approximately 1,500 square feet. eMarketer estimates US stores now average approximately 1,800 square feet, with new freestanding buildings typically ranging from 1,700 to 2,700 square feet.
