As of Sep 3, 2016, there were 43,083 restaurants in over 125 countries worldwide, including 20,152 KFC, 16,172 Pizza Hut, 6,511 Taco Bell, 234 Little Sheep and 14 East Dawning restaurants, 8,873 of which were operated by the company and the remainder of which were franchised, licensed or operated by unconsolidated affiliates.

During fiscal 2015, the company and franchises opened 2,365 and closed 1,222 restaurants systemwide, while the company also refranchised 362 and acquired 59 restaurants from franchisees. Net additions were: 532 KFC, 458 Pizza Hut, 201 Taco Bell, -36 Little Sheep and -9 East Dawning. During the first quarter of fiscal 2016, the company added 33 net new restaurants, the majority of which were Taco Bell locations. In fiscal 2016, the company expects to open 2,400 new restaurants, 600 of which will be in China.

At year-end, the company owned approximately 905 units and leased the land, building or both for approximately 8,025 units worldwide. Company-owned restaurants in the U.S. with leases are generally leased for initial terms of 15-20 years and have renewal options.

The prototypical KFC is a 2,500 to 3,200 square foot freestanding building with a drive-thru on a 35,000 square foot lot, with seating for 60-85 guests and at least 35 parking spots. The prototype for an in-line or end-cap dine-in Pizza Hut is 2,000 to 3,500 square foot, with seating for 20 to 80 guests and parking for 20 to 50; and for a delivery unit 900 to 1,500 square feet with a minimum of 5 dedicated parking spots. For free-standing Pizza Hut units, there are 3 prototypes: a 1,100 to 1,500 square foot delivery unit, with seating for 8 to 12 guests and 20 to 40 parking spots; a 2,000 to 3,200 dine-in counter service unit with seating for 20 to 80 guests and 20 to 40 parking spots; and a 2,500 to 4,000 square foot dine-in full-service unit with seating for 50 to 100 guests and 30 to 60 parking spots. The prototypical Taco Bell is 1,600 to 2,600 square foot freestanding building with a drive-thru on a 21,000 to 26,000 square foot lot, with seating for 28-66 guests and at least 30 parking spots.
