As of Sep 28, 2014 there were 4,590 locations systemwide, including 869 in the US (3 company-operated, 685 franchised and 181 self-serve kiosk), 3,665 in Canada (15 company-operated, 3,498 franchised and 152 self-serve kiosks) and 56 other international locations.

In fiscal 2013, 244 restaurants were opened and 35 restaurants were closed systemwide, and 17 self-serve kiosks were opened and 5 kiosks were closed. In the first nine months of fiscal 2014, 104 new restaurants and 10 self-serve kiosks were opened, and 23 restaurants and 5 kiosks were closed were closed. For the full year, the company expects to open approximately 140 to 160 new restaurants in Canada, evenly split between standard and non-standard formats, 40 to 60 restaurants in the US and about 35 other international locations, while 20 to 40 locations are typically closed annually.

At year-end, the company owned 796 locations and leased 2,625 locations. Leases are generally for terms of 10 to 20 years, and often have one or more five-year renewal options.

A typical standard restaurant is a free-standing building ranging from 1,000 to 3,080 square feet with a dining room and drive-thru window. The company also develops non-standard restaurants designed to fit anywhere, consisting of small full-service restaurants and/or self-serve kiosks in offices, hospitals, colleges, airports, grocery stores, gas and convenience locations, drive-thru-only units on smaller pieces of property, and full-serve sites and carts located in sports arenas and stadiums that operate only during events with a limited product offering. These units typically average between 150 to 1,000 square feet.
